Contentment
DAY 86/365
โWhat better way to arrive to the party than being late?
Like we're learning everyday, nothing in this world is truly black or white (pun intended).
โToday, we're going to be talking about contentment.
Contentment means being satisfied with what you have. It means being happy with your current situation, lifestyle and choices.
โIn my mother's wise words on a random Tuesday evening nine years ago, "Awwal, you have to always be contended with whatever you have". Do I agree with the sentiment? Yes and No.
Why I Don't Agree.
โContentment limits you. It makes you settle for less.
โBeing contented with let's say the current state of your life is you agreeing to not be better. It's saying you enjoy how sad your current lifestyle is. It's agreeing to live a sub par life filled with suffering when you should be enjoying yourself.
โContentment makes you live a mediocre life. It's this little voice in your head telling you that you should just accept things the way they are. It says you should โwait for your timeโ; but at the end of the day, you stay in your current situation forever.
โContentment makes you lazy. You'd say, โIโm okay with where I am so there's no need to do anything againโ. It turns you into a couch potato. A bench warmer. Someone that sits on the fence while others are out there doing the extraordinary.
Why I Agree.
โContentment helps you to appreciate your current situation. You know you're not where you want to be but you're grateful you're not where you used to be. I feel like a motivational speaker.
Contentment makes you see the bright sides to things. You're able to breathe and just live in the moment.
โContentment stops you from going after what doesn't belong to you. It's common knowledge that a lack of contentment is the breeding ground for pilfering. People who aren't contented are never satisfied, they always want more even when getting that more requires taking it from someone without their permission.
Contentment is a taming technique.
This can be good and bad as I've already explained.
โWhile some situations require you to not be contented, there is a thin line between not being contented and being greedy. They are two sides that have already started blurring into each other.
โIndividuals use the excuse of bettering themselves to claim what's not theirs. Greed is really a disease. A greedy person is basically someone who because he/she isn't satisfied with what they have decides to get more by shady means. This is wrong.
โNo matter how you want to look at it, greed is wrong. It's actually ironic because we're all greedy. You, me, our parents, our family, friends, the random neighbour that you don't know his name, the woman from the salon down the street, the leaders of empires and nations. We are all greedy!
โBut there's a catch. This greed only thrives with the right stimulation. It can only grow and start to manifest itself once your lack of contentment goes out of hand. You use the fact that you don't like the situation you find yourself in to steal and hurt people. Then you tell yourself, โI'm only trying to surviveโ to excuse your bad behaviour.
โI'm not calling anybody out because there have been occurrences where I have been greedy and there probably still will be because I'm just trying to survive. I'm so funny
โI'd like to conclude by saying that as much as you want to better yourself, you shouldn't do it at the expense of others. One hair doesn't clog a drain but several hairs will. You might think that it won't hurt anyone but in the long run, the effects won't be desirable. You also risk yourself when you continuously dabble in it. People will lose trust in you and will not like to socialize with you. You're not an island, you need people around you.
โAlso, please don't say โOthers are doing it, so I'll do it tooโ. Just because everyone else is doing something doesn't mean it's right or you should do it.
โRemember that it costs nothing to be a good person. I hope your week is filled with love and light.
